1986 Jeep CJ7

Post by jwt73 »

Hello all,
Just bought another Jeep, as they are great. (As we all know)
I think this time since it’s an automatic with the I6 4.2 with unknown mileage, I need to rebuild it for reliability. While I’m doing that I would love some good suggestions on what to do. I think giving it some added power for strictly street use to make it more fun is goal. I don’t know how much is the right amount of upgrade but quick enough to keep up with a 2000 Honda Civic would be nice. I would love to hear what you folks suggest. I am not too concerned with overall costs and can build a lot of it myself, and have some friends who build race motors to lean on. Anyway, if you guys would be so kind, give me your thoughts. FWIW I don’t want to swap a v8 in as I have an ‘83 I just did that to, and I want to keep this one more stock.

Buy a previously running complete junkyard 4.0 engine that came from a YJ/TJ and use the crank from your 4.2 to rebuild it into a stroker.

I built a 4.7 engine that does everything you want, twice the power and three times the FUN. Mine is an automatic with 273 gears on stock suspension with 31” tires. Build a stout little stroker and bolt it in where then 258 was. I think you will be happy.
