When I created my username I guessed how muck power my new inline six would make.

I might have been a little optimistic when I went with 275/350, but after seeing the results above, Maybe I’m not too far off.

I tolled him what I wanted and we talked about parts and what would do what. I made sure all the pistons and rods were balanced. after putting it together I went to a dyno tuner to get the most out of it. I now have a 1998 XJ that has a 4.6 engine that has every thing I wanted in it. 289 HP 345 torque. the torque starts at 800 all the way up to 2500. then it flattens out up to about 4000 RPM. the thing is so smooth I can hardly fell it running until I step on the peddle . lot of work to get here and about $5,000 in the engine. that is parts, and other things I did not count on but decided to do as I was building this. like intake header and so on. so if you got the money, the time and the well. in my humble opinion it is worth it.
I have to agree with this 100%.

I would like to hear more about this build.

Which head was used, was it ported, what cam?

I have not done any tuning on mine. It runs so good I never even though about it. Since I get 15 MPG, I am now considering taking it to the local dyno tuner, and see if we can make some changes for the better.

The only thing I would do differently would be adding some 1.7 roller rockers. I used OEM Mopar rockers.

I definitely have no regrets with building this engine. It is the perfect match for a CJ-7 in my opinion.

I have a ported and polished 331 head from Russ. the intake manifold came off of a 99 xj. It’s important to port match the intake to the ported head. 1.7 roller rockers. 231 comp cam, crank is a 4.2 that is 10 weighted or 12, can’t remember now, but it is heaver and more balanced from Russ. hooker headers that are painted with hi temp paint, cured in the oven, then wrapped. I soaked the wrap with 3 coats of the same header paint. the reason I did all this are for 3 reasons. to keep the heat out of the engine bay, to maximize thermal flow, you would not believe how much sound is transferred though the headers. the rap really quiet it down. the reason for the paint is rust and to prevent water from getting into the wrap as much as possible. The rods are long rods, the pistons are custom made from Russ. My throttle body is 63mm necked down to 62mm. Jeep knew what they were doing with their throttle body. 60mm necked down to 58mm. as of this time I am getting 22mpg on the high way (keep it under 65) and 20 in town if you stay off the fun peddle. I am thinking about milling the top of the throttle body to 64mm but not sure if I will. I have about 7000 miles on the motor so I expect all things to get better. One more thing. It is very important to brake the cam and then the motor in right. The time you take in doing this will be paid back double in performance and reliability.
Good lock with your build
sounds like you are doing a good job

Thanks for the reply. I’ll probably upgrade to the 1.7 roller rockers one day, but for now my engine runs great, with the exception of my 15 mpg.

I will probably have my header and down pipe coated at Jet Hot, inside and out for the same reasons…trying to get the heat out through the exhaust vice heating the engine compartment and drivers floor area.

My next upgrade is a Ford 8.8 rear with 373’s and a tight LSD. After I get it installed I’ll probably take it to the local dyno-tuner and see if we can fine tune for performance & economy.

Do you have any suggestions for my 15 mpg ? This is my first 4.0 in-line six adventure, so I am still learning.

My cam is a 68-236-4, from Russ. I installed it straight-up, and it checked out at 111 Intake C/L. It has excellent off idle throttle response, I probably never give it more that half throttle during normal driving.
