96 XJ 4.6 swapped into a 98 TJ 2.5: what needs to be done to make it work

I have a 98 TJ 2.5 with a manual trans, that is my daily. I also have a 96 XJ Country with a HO 4.0 with auto trans that I was considering using as the donor to stroke and swap into my TJ. I have purchased a 98 TJ Safari 4.0 with auto ECM to use for this potential swap. Will that that ECM run the 96 engine?

The '98 PCM will indeed run the '96 engine and as long as you swap engine, tranny, plus all the electronics into your 2.5 TJ, everything should work fine.

Look into what it takes to do a 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder swap. Also there some differences in block mounting points.

You will at the very least need to chop the motor mounts off the frame and weld new ones on. Not sure if that's a non-starter for you. Personally, if I were going to go to that trouble, I'd probably just do a Magnum v8 swap.

Better still, a 392 Hemi swap or even a Hellcat engine swap. :D
