Stroker build questions

Post by ethanb »

Looking into rebuilding/stroking my 2004 LJ 4.0 with 220K. It's got dry bearing squeal when getting on it too much and it's just time before it breaks. I just rebuilt the transfer case and transmission. The engine has a new head clearwater redesigned thicker head about a year ago with minimal miles on it. My plan is to leave the head alone unless anything needs to be upgraded. I haven't been able to figure out if the springs need to be changed. Any other insight is appreciated. Block will be cleaned, checked, new bearings, and bored .030 over. I'll stick with the 4.0 connecting rods as those should work with the pistons below. And the head gasket should be a .043" if I've read everything correctly. I've already upgraded the coil to the viper one. Timing chain is newer also, did the cam a couple years ago.

Crank: SCAT Engine Components 9-4.2L-3895 - Scat Series 9000 Cast Pro Comp Stroker Lightweight Crankshafts
Pistons: KB UEM-KB424C.030
Cam: COMP Cams 163-201-5
Rods & Lifters: Assume factory 4.0 ones, no special needs

Anything else I am missing? High flow water pump or better radiator? High flow oil pump?

The only change I'd suggest is to use Russ' slightly taller custom pistons so that you won't need to deck the block to achieve a tight quench height.
The radiator, water pump, and oil pump can be stock replacements. The only other non-stock parts you'll need are larger injectors.

Thanks! Water and oil pump are both new within the last couple years, but I'll check them when I get it apart. Probably get a new radiator, can't remember if I've replaced it yet or not. I bypassed the trans cooler in the stock radiator so a manual radiator would be better. Any idea how to get ahold of Russ? I emailed him after finding his info on a post here last week but nothing yet for a response.

Apologize for being late in responding to my emails of late.

Just a quick personal history of this past month.

First of the month I went into the hospital with Covid 19 for just over a week along with My 93 year old Mother that was just admitted a few days after me.

Fortunately I’ve been back home for a few weeks now but still on oxygen, but unfortunately my Mother wasn’t as fortunate and passed on the 21st.

Just now slowly getting back on track.

If you could please resubmit your email to me just to make sure didn’t get caught in spam.
Will be happy to get info and pricing out to you.

Thanks,
Russ Pottenger

Appreciate all the condolences and well wishes guys.
My Mother and I are practicing Christians and because of that I believe that she is in a better place.

The good news is my pulmonary specialist cleared me to remove my oxygen so I should be back up to speed shortly.

You have no idea how much I have appreciated all the people that have reached out to me.

Thanks so much!
Russ
