Comp Cams 163-201-5 Extreme 4x4

Post by sink1978 »

Hi,

I’m hoping for some advice. I have a 2001 wrangler. It only has about 80k miles but I have a couple of collapsed lifters. I’m thinking of replacing the cam when replacing the lifters. Below are the specs on the cam. I like that I can run stock springs and it plays well with the ecu. Does anyone have any experience with it? I’m not expecting huge things from it but just to be better than stock.

Looks like a nice upgrade over the stock cam.

Good upgrade choice for late 4.0’s that wanna retain the late thrust plate style camshaft thats going to keep a stock spec valve spring.
Another benefit is the nitride heat treat option is included.

I’ve sold a lot of these cams including the 163-301-5 that is a good choice with an upgraded valve spring.

I also offer this package with an upgraded lifter.
Feel free to hit me up.

Thanks,

I believe I am experiencing Valve float between 4200 and 4400 rpm with this cam (163-201-05) on stock springs. Have any of you ran into this problem?

Also if any of you could help me with a few questions on the p5249464 spring setup it would be appreciated. There seems to be a bit of different information on the web. from what I have gathered you need the 3 components for this to work?

questions on the components

1. spring p5249464 ( is this a stock spring out of a vehicle or only an upgraded spring you can buy independently? ) are there any alternative part numbers?

2 keepers/valve locks p4529218 ( has this been superseded to pn 3300352 ) ???? is this 7 or 8 degree as they seem to differ when you look them up?

3. retainer p4452032 seems to be the hardest and most expensive to find. Is it for an 8mm or 5/16" stem?. is it 7 or 8 degree? can you use the retainers from 2.5l or 5.9l magnums around 1994-1999's when I look these up some sights say you can and there are aftermarket parts for these years. Even jegs shows them under the p4452032 pn as working for 2.2/2.5 5.2/5.9 magnums.

Also some info shows that there are steel, aluminum and titanium versions of this retainer pn 4286574 and 4349642. are these viable parts that anyone has used?

Lastly is this the only solution to springs on the 4.0l if you do not want to pull the head and have it machined to accept the comp cams spring kit? If these components are not available is there another solution where I dont have to pull the head and take it to the machinist.

thanks in advance

With only 0.45" of valve lift, stock valve springs should be fine. Perhaps yours are tired and need replacing if they are the 20 year old originals.

New to this forum and glad to see this thread. 3 related questions below.
I’m trying to find a cam like the 163-201-5 (99+)for my 98 stroker project but I don’t see a 68-201-5. there is a 68-301-5. I guess I’ll ask CC to grind a custom 68-201-5 or nitride a 68-232-4. Thoughts on this?
I like the lift on the 163-201-5 (.450) vs the 163-301-5 (.488/.507) because I estimate both cams have nearly the same duration above .350 (or so) and in the posts I’ve seen w/o a lot of head work the 630 head has little flow increase above .400. And the 301 cam needs more spring pressure and energy. Please let me know if I’m off on this?
Does anyone have the ICA or ICL for the 163-201-5 so I can calculate DCR?

3.905 bore, 3.895 stroke, 6.125 4.0 rods. 9-9.25 SCR target, ~8.0 DCR
63mm throttle body from Leigh.
5000 RPM absolute max needed. I want to use the factory computer with larger injectors
Thanks for any help.

The 163-201-5 is basically the same as the 163-301-5 except that the former has a lower 0.450" valve lift for both intake/exhaust that allows the use of OEM valve springs.
