Jeep Strokers

Getting close to assembling my stroker and I'm looking at what assembly oil to use as well as what lol for break in.

I've seen some Lucas and such assembly lube that has good reviews and that stuff seems alright. I've also seen some guys say use moly on the cam/lifters and run gm eos on the first run.

What assembly lube/lubes?

What oil/additives for break in?

What weight/viscosity for break in and beyond?

Cmd number 3 for cam and valve train. Brad Penn, Joe Gibbs, maxima, and Schaeffer all make good high zinc oils. I really like the cmd # 3 for the valve train. It doesn't have a bunch of solids in it. Manley sells it rebadged. Mc master-carr and similar outfits will have it. Marshall's industrial hardware in san Diego has it on the shelf.

I think I bought CompCams brand break in oil to go with the cam. It was one of the cheaper options and I wanted to use their stuff in case something went wrong, I could tell them I used their oil, followed their procedure, now send me a new cam/lifters Luckily I didn't have to test that theory.

What oil/weight are you guys using after break in or after initial break in? I was going to use the comp oil because I'm doing new lifters and then probably change the filter after the first 20-30 minutes and then try to break in the rings. After that I'm not sure what I'll use.

I guess a conventional 5w30 with zddp additive for the first 1000 miles and then maybe synthetic 5w30 with a zddp additive?

Jeep called out for 10w30. As far as synthetic goes. After 20 years of working in dealerships and independent shops, I have not really seen any benefits to synthetic oil in flat tappet applications. If jeep wants synthetic they call for it. Valvoline vr1 has zinc in it already. From a cost standpoint you'll be money ahead running that. Its easy to find and significantly cheaper than synthetic and additive. Proper maintenance keeps engines clean. Oil type doesn't make much difference as far as cleaning ability.

I use Joe Gibbs Racing BR 30. It is a NOT LEGAL for street use break in oil that is specifically designed for flat tappet cams with super high spring loads. I have used it on a wide variety of engines with zero failures.

Good recommendation using the Joe Gibbs stuff.

With his involvement in NASCAR requiring flat tappet cam’s he should know as much as anybody what is working.

I’ve been running Valvoline VR-1 in my 4.0. It had 50k when I bought it and now has 260k miles. No noise, no smoke and runs as smooth and strong as when I bought it.
