Hi, I just learned rhat not only XJ was fitted with NP242, same transfer case was also later used in Jeep Liberty.
Are the two transfer cases same or do they have different spline / bolt pattern?

Re: XJ and Liberty NP242 Compatibility
I'm sure you've already found this out, but for anyone else who finds this in the future - a Liberty 242 will not work in an XJ or ZJ since the liberty 242 has no speed sensor / gear in the tail-housing. The PCM uses that speed sensor for the speedo gauge and transmission shifting among other things.
