4.6 stroker distributor question
hey guys.
so I am a little stumped.
I am running comp cams extreme cam - +3 timing.
my distributor is set about 1cm past post one at #1 TDC
by all the research I'm doing it should be 1cm before spark plug #1 post on the cap.
can someone tell me why my motor will just crank forever when I set it to the "correct" timing ?
bad cps ? map ?
other symptoms. the car in gear randomly revs to 1300rpm. usually happens over speed bumps
otherwise she is running rich.
I originally figured my cam is too intense. but that doesnt quite make sense.
thanks for any insight.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
Your research is only telling you the ballpark position it should be in to fire it up and drive to someone with the ability to sync your injector timing. Sounds like that might be your issue. That and/or being off by a tooth on the dizzy.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
The only way I know for sure is the DRB scan tool from Chrysler. It's hard finding a dealer that had one and it's willing to play ball. They also like to charge an entire hour for something that takes 10 min. I had to call 3 different dealers in my area to find one willing to charge me only $25 or something to set it.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
And what do you mean your cam is +/-3 degrees?

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
Im running yella terra 1.7
and currently K68-231-4 is the cam.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-K68-231-4/
springs and retainers
Mopar Performance spings P5249464 with Mopar Performance retainers P4452032
stock pushrods.
arp head bolts.
I might be wrong. but I was 99% sure this cam said it advanced the timing by 3degrees
now that im looking again on jeggs Im not so sure.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
your comment about the distributor being off a tooth might be correct.
Im actually going to test this now.
I removed it and put it back in last year.
maybe that has been all of this.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
Tested.
im not off a tooth.
or so I think....
It started and ran. it was roaming in rpm.s
then died. and would not start again.
changed the timing like 50 times.
wouldnt start.
changed back to my 4 degrees after Cylinder 1 at tdc.
VIOLLA starts right up.
I think my issue is elsewhere of timing.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
If the cam is ground +3 as you mention and your positioning the dist. within the "ears" then is +3* off.
Cut the ears off. Make it run and twist the dist back and forth. The engine will tell you where it wants to be.
Just make sure your on tooth with #1 before you start.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
Ill get some pictures of this on my day off and maybe someone can tell me if I am off.
My gut and car knowledge tells me where it is currently is wrong.
the car itself wont run where I feel is correct.
^ ears are cut off the distributor.
http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/dist_index.html
I found this.
Im going to compare.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
Re-timed it according to that angelfire article.
shes running better now.
no more backfiring/hiccups.
I must have had the distributor off a bit.
cam is still way too much for the 1.7's
going to remedy this in the summer through Russ.
Build log to come.

Re: 4.6 stroker distributor question
I figured I should update this.
I figured out the whole issue this morning.
got in the car.
turned the key.
she was deader than dead.
popped the hood.
there is corrosion on the wire between fusebox and battery.
this explains a lot.
I musta bumped it working on the distributor. I bet thats why it ran again.
woohoo me !
