Then I spent the whole afternoon behind the bench with various burrs, stones, shop vac, blow gun etc...
The injector protrusions are quite restrictive:
And later, after cleaning those I went to near the line, final port matching will be done after I port the head casting.
This was just a drill to find the tools that works best ands remove that pound of alu away...
And today I laid my hands on the great TJ engine that I got. First piston / rod out was a bit strange. Sort of a new model I guess:
So, I need a new rod or two...

Thanks for the pics on your porting job. And I did the same thing to me original motor! Hydrolocked the crap out of it. It still drive fine for a long time like that though! I think my con-rod was more bent though lol.

Still doing the disassembly of the donor engine and learning on my way...
Press fit wrist pin - wel that is not usual on this side of the pond. So I had to pull those apart - and I did not want to destroy the pistons. Youtube amde a couple suggestions and the simplest was a puller tool with thread bar:
In the vise:
Basically pressing only around one wall - so no bending or any other stress than just compression around the pin:
Made in my shop, a piece of aluminum, brass, steel bar and thread bar. And must be well lubricated. Also during operation - a couple of times. And with six of those - quite warming up exercise
Weight of the rods was within 1 gram, so I guess this is quite nice in the end? Except that I am now missing one.

Bein quet does not mean that nothing is going on...
Meanwhile I was shopping at RA, Summit and Russ.
Russ helped me a lot with final selection of components (Pistons, crank and stuff that goes along). More on those later.
Everything is now being shipped (literally!) overseas inside container with my budd's purchase of some cars... Waiting now...
Meanwhile I was continuing to part out the TJ rengine, that was fighting back to me. I went to gun fight with knive - so I had to correct that.
Perfect excuse to buy the Mig welder that I wanted to have for some time now - and that created additional new project to my pile of projects - folding welding table - trolley:
This was also the opportunity to make some special tools to free the Visco and some other things that were fighting me. Welding gun solved some gun - knife issues
Pulling the harmonic balancer should not be an issue - if my buddy's puller would not be also pretty beaten down:
So I "relocated" the end part to "healthy" thread section:

I was balancing between buying new ones or fixing the old ones and opted for fixing old ones as I trust original parts more than knock off aftermarket replacements. They might look OK, but metallurgy and QC ?

What are pluses and minuses of each?
Which one would you recomend to prepare for final fit?

Anybody on valve cover?
The goods have lande in Europe and should be delivered within next days. What I forgot to add to the pack is plastigauge set.
I have seen them in many colors and packaging sets....

A dial bore gauge and micrometer would be much more accurate than plastigauge.
Plastigauge Isn’t really that accurate and should only be used as a last resort.

Hi, just a short update....
Project still there. Working on two jeeps now (have bought also an 4.0 XJ 1990)
Actually I was looking for an NP242 as it has permanent 4x4 to be swapped. Found a local small add and went to look. It had the NP242 that I wanted - and a whole nice XJ was attached to it. At least to nice to be parted out. IMHO.
Anyway - I have been slowly working on a templates to be CNC cutted out of 1.5mm steel (like 24 gauge).
This template will serve for both intake and head side, using register pins.
A question for those that did the DIY porting - how much meat can I remove on each side of existing ports?
I want to avoid being to excessive, especially on intake side as it will be hard to port intake deep enough to avoid loses due to velocity drop where the channel gets wide:
Any feedback?
One more question about the dreaded 0331 casting - yes, I have that on my TJ
Was there any official recall from Jeep for that casting? Any link? Greatly appreciated feedback

Here are some results from template making process:
It show both head and intake side, misalignment and shape mismatch.
In next version I will correct both to have same shape on both sides, using metal template.
