Identifying 4.2 crankshaft

Post by Car Enthusiast »

So I was lucky the other day and found a guy swapping a 350 in his 88 jeep and was getting rid of the 4.2. Picked up the crankshaft for cheap, but before I start sending it to the machine shop I just wanted to confirm it was the right one. I am tracking four counterweight but is there any casting numbers on it?

Also, is there anything else I would want to grab from him before he gets rid of the motor?

Seriously? You'll know when you see it and yes this is it. If you did a direct comparison against the stock 4.0L crank from any yard Cherokee you would immediately notice. It's that big of a deal. Only other thing to collect would be the original connecting rods(probably still mated to OE pistons) or get a new set for $$$.

Is the *3727 casting anywhere on the crank?

Check around the middle of the casting.

Well shit, it is a 5477 casting. Looks like the guy wasn't all the way honest on his motor. Can I still use this crank just have 10mm cut off the front?

I would use it anyway but I stick to v-belts(I don't recommend this for you). If you want serpentine that badly, figure out a way to fill the space between crank nose and balancer or grind the nose down to short spec.

Cut the snout off or just use a spacer, I cut the snout on my 12CW crank.

Russ has boxes of the spacers. Just snag one from him and carry on.

What John said ^^^^^

I'm sure you resolved this problem by now, but much easier than cutting the snout down. My spacer with the keyway cut in it makes it a quick fix.
