Hello,

Any opinions on swapping a v8 or building a stroker? I'm looking for information to help me decide which way to go

Ideas?

Thanks
Dean

Let me understand this... you came on to a forum named "Jeep Strokers" to ask about a stroker or a V8 swap. Sorry, but the name isn't Jeep Strokers or Jeep V8 swaps. If you have questions about a stroker configuration ask away. I don't think this is an appropriate place for your question, and I doubt people feel the need to validate their choice.

However I will chime in a bit. Dollar for dollar the stroker route is cheaper, easier and will produce more power. The newer the Jeep the more expensive the V8 swap gets.

You aren't pushing buttons, this is just the wrong place to ask that question.

Well I wont speak for SIlverXJ but the Stroker vs V8 things can get a bit tired. If you want more torque than a stock late model push rod small block . Which is a drop in replacement without ANY wiring, adaptors, welding or drive train replacement then you're in the right place.

I would guess the average Joe would say a V8 swap is the way to go, mostly out of ignorance or being Small block Chevy sheeple. Depending on your needs however it might be the way to go. If you need 350 cheap HP and you have lots of time or friends that have done V8 swaps then there's no question a LT1 will be more cost effective in the long run.

On the other hand if you have a 4.0, can rebuild an engine, and what you want is something more interesting, powerful and reliable than a 350 out of a 80's Camaro (And the Mullet you'll be required to wear) out of a junk yard. For around the same money and without a whole bunch of sundays spent trying to get junk yard parts to fit and work; The stroker is the bolt in solution.

Stroker would be cheaper and would bolt right in, and have all the wiring already nessecary. 10 out of 10 on easy scale.

If money is not an issue I would go with a 5.7 Hemi, but you need DEEEEEP pockets. If you are on a tighter budget and want a good reliable torque engine thats a bolt in...JEEP STROKER!!!!

This is the closest to a flame as I've seen on this forum (didn't consider it a flame myself, just pointing out the obvious but it was close ), and that's why I like it here. Anyway this may give you some of our opinions without us having to :deadhorse: .

If you like doing this :brickwall:, as I seem too, then the V8's for you. Otherwise STROKER, unless you have a V8 drivetrain laying around already.

I'm contemplating this myself, Instead of putting the stroker in the YJ as planned, put it in the XJ. The YJ is a 2.5 liter and to fit the stroker requires a new drivetrain, relocated engine mounts, and modified engine electronics just like the V8 swap does. Then I get the stroker not my son.

Thanks guys, I've done a couple of V8 Chevy swaps into jeeps but that's getting kinda old (You can only build so many brackets before that happens). I'm really looking for something a little diffrent. I can tell by the board that sounds like you can push some serious torque out of a stroker but whats the seat of the pants impression is it a WOW or just kind of a warm fuzzy feeling. I'm not dissatsified with my 4.0 in stock trim but I have this habitual itch that I just have to scratch!

Its an age old arguement. The V8 crowd will swear up and down that the extra cylinders are worth the while. There are more parts available for 350's, and is cheaper to make big power. But just like you say, its "just another 350" in a jeep or any other vehicle for that matter.

I went with the stroker for the "bolt in" ease, and even more so because of the factory look. The only thing that gives my jeep away is the loud ass exhaust i decided to go with. Other then that, opening the hood yields your basic looking 4.0 liter engine.

Drivetrain is a major consideration. I can't speak for any of the adapters to mount something like an AX15 onto a SBC or anything like that. But i know my YJ driveshaft from ear to ear is 12".... if you plan to get anything longer in there, be prepaired for some hairy modifications

then theres the sleeper aspect! probly not such a big deal in offroad, but think after you crawl farther up the mountain than your buddy (who's jeep was the proud owner of the chev you guys put in, note WAS in that sentence) and he looks under the hood to see none other than the "boring 4.0". or IS IT??

I used to be a diesel mechanic and you don't see engines that are doing hard work designed as a V8. The 6 cylinder design has an inherent advantage to a V8 when it comes to making TORQUE but not necessarily horsepower. Torque is what gets the work done though, so I agree nothing is more fun than driving a rig that will just flat pull especially if it takes you past a rig with a V8 in it.

I'm Sold

Now I'll I gotta do is read up and decide what I need for parts! Oooh the wife will love getting more parts!

Thanks
