First post for a jeep stroker

Hey all. First post here, been a jeep guy for awhile so I've been lurking in the shadows with your site here and have read several post on strokers, Always wanted to do a stroker but timing just wasn't there. Couple of weeks ago I bought someone's stroker project and have desided to fast forward my plans, have a good 06 4.0l matching numbers to my jeep,0331 heads but no crank. Ive attempted to locate a 258 cu.in. 12wt. but is becoming a tuff indevoeor. I contacted one place that didn't have any 258 in stock just 232, stated that they were selling 258 cranks by the hand full but didn't pay much attention to the cores coming in, now they have a bunch of 242 cranks. Couple of other places I've reached out to have cranks but with shipping and core charges can reach in the $450 amount. I've even considering a mini stroker 4.2 just because a crank can be had for $200 including shipping. Not in a big hurry for a crank, just like to get my hands on one and have everything I need when my engine wears out, after 10 years still going strong. Just curious where you guys resource your cranks from and vendors with a good reputation? Thanks in advance.

First off welcome to Jeep Strokers.

With a little bit of reading and research you'll find out that they'll be no reason not to build some level of a stroker.

I surprisingly sell a lot of the 232 3.500 stroker kits. For a very minimal cost upgrade over what a stock 4.0 would cost to build, you can be a member of the Stroker club :D

Typically a index ground 232 crank shipped to your door will cost you $250.00 and $460.00 for a new 258 stroke Scat crank.

You're more than welcome to shoot me a call or email and will be happy to discuss stroker kit options.

Russ Pottenger Is a vendor that has earned a good reputation here on Jeepstrokers. Keep an eye on your local Craigslist for a good deal on a 258. You can rob a crank, and sell or scrap the rest. I currently have 3, 12 weight cranks. I have a fresh machined 12 weight .020 mains and rods. I just paid $150.00 to have it turned, and I paid $100.00 for the crank. I'll sell it for $300.00 plus shipping. I also have a 12 weight that was run at .010 mains and rods. I can let it go for $150.00. You can take it to your machinist and have it checked. I'll need to look at it again, but I don't think it's scored, so you might be able to run it as is. I live near Atlanta. If you live close I can meet you somewhere. If not I can check on shipping. Like I have said before, I'm not making any money on these cranks. I pick them up if I can get them for $100 or less, just for those wanting a 12 weight crank. Heck, I probably loose money in gas and time to pick them up and run them to the machine shop (45 minutes away). I have sold 2 cranks to members on here. If I think they are questionable, I won't sell them without having them checked. That is why I have one that is fresh machined. It had spun a rod bearing and I wasn't sure how far it would need turned to clean it up.

Thanks guys for the reply. I am interested in a 12wt. just from what I've read up on. I've got a friend who has a 4wt. stroker in his Cherokee and it does rev quick and is a fast little jeep. Me I like slow and just feathering the gas peddle, I would like just having the 12wt. momentum when I go wheeling. Let me PM you and talk a little more on that 12wt.

What does the Weight count Mean? Are more Weights better then Less?

From my research I don't think one is better over the other, more personnel preference. I think it's generally considered that the more counter weight, being this case 12wt. the more rotating mass you have to ease over something without stalling the vehicle while off road. I believe there is about 10 lbs difference between the 4wt and 12wt. Someone may correct me, I'm new here.

The 12 counter weight crankshafts are heavier than the 8 (by 20 lbs) and are supposed to be stronger? I don't know if that is true. Check the FAQ on crankshafts

If your building a stroker for a street/trail rig a 12 counterweight Crankshaft should be your first choice if you're able to obtain one.

The extra counterweights will make the Crankshaft happier and Engine run smoother, and better still if balanced. Just remember you'll need to run one of my spacers or an equivalent. Otherwise you'll need to shorten the Crankshaft's snout.

The 258 crankshaft comes with either 4 counterweights (46lb) or 12 counterweights (66lb).
The stock 4.0 crankshaft has 8 counterweights and weighs 55lb.

I have yet to hear anybody's real world experience having run both cranks to see how much of a difference there actually is.

BTW--how does the SCAT stroker crank compare?

Scat crank is still a cast crank but is made out of better material is stronger than the OEM 258 4wt crank.

I'm selling them for $425.00

How many counterweights do the scat cranks have? I haven't seen one yet. I think its pretty cool that companies are still making new parts for the obsolete amc/jeep 6.

You could try a search "Jeep Scat Crankshaft".

Scat web site doesn't show any pictures, and only gives stroke, rod pin size, and approx. weight. So I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask a question to a gentleman who has built several Jeep strokers and sells Scat cranks. But thanks for your help.
