Why would an engine rebuild cause trans to shift lazy?

One of the many things I liked about my Cherokee was the nice firm shifting between gears on the AW4. While I rebuilt the engine I decided to get a new converter for it before buttoning it back up. Now the trans shifts like a 1976 Lincoln. Works well but I miss those firm shifts. Any ideas or ways to improve this? Trans stays nice and cool also.

The only thing I can think of is the throttle valve cable (TV cable) might need to be readjusted?

Adjust the TV cable first. Push and hold the button, and pull the cable housing away from the throttle body. With the engine off floor the accelerator.

Also, check the TPS voltage.

I adjusted the cable. No change. I am guessing the new converter is the culprit. That's what I get for changing out parts that are perfectly fine I guess.
