Is this deposit buildup or shitty casting in my crankcase?

I've been lurking on this forum for a few years, and have gained quite a bit of knowledge from just reading. I plan on doing a 4.6 build someday, unfortunately my new/current Jeep is a Cherokee with only 92,000 miles.... Without having a mechanical reason I almost feel rebuilding the current engine would be a sin.
I need some advice on my crankcase, and figure this is the best forum to ask. I recently dropped my oil pan to replace my rear main seal. In between being hit in the face by globs of oil and grim I noticed that the driver side of the crank case (internally) had a much rougher texture. At first I thought it was a buildup of deposits/ grime, but scraping at it with a pick did little to nothing (about as much as a steel pick would do to cast iron). I wanted to check and see if this is normal before I put everything back together. I've never seen casting this rough... but I may be paranoid and looking for a reason to build a stroker.
Your input is appreciated.
