So this is very worrying and im not sure if my concerns are well placed
the timing chain seems really loose. is this normal ?
pics are below





Cam is out.
The cam lobes appear to be a little worn, hardly any but still.
The cam bearings. 3 have deep groves in them.

I tried to pull the crank but I dont have the socket size needed. Must have lost it in moving because I rebuilt this engine before :doh: :doh:

Will go to harbor freight and get the correct size, pull the crank and get some pics of crank +cam.

Still really confused as to where that odd copper washer came from.

That looks pretty loose to me. Is that the old chain or a new one?

That chain is very loose. But what is even more concerning is the wear on the cam cog.

Are those shavings magnetic? If so, they aren't bearings, but most likely from that cog.

Pics of the cam bearings?

Couple of thoughts.
When you removed the timing cover did it have that rubber guide installed?
It's kind of hard to tell in the picture but still worth asking.
If you have the long 2.500 snout on your crank, did you have a spacer between your crankshaft washer and vibration dampener?

it is a scat crank.
and it did have the washer/spacer around the cam cog.


I don't remember the timing set being that loose when I assembled it.
you are definitely correct that cam cog is worn down badly.
I will check if the shavings are magnetic. they appear to be the same color as the cam cog so it is possible.

I remember installing it when piecing the engine together. it is not there now though :doh: :doh:

the spacer was on there. just took it off for picture.

I will Get pics of the rest of the engine uploaded tonight. It goes to the machine shop in the morning.

Cam bearings are groved but not badly.
crank is about the same.
just needs a touchup on both surfaces.

Pistons show no lip on bore and held good compression before pulling motor. so they may not even need a hone. but the machine shop will tell me.

I think we have a problem.if I remember the Pistons had to be pressed into the rods. 3 of them have loosely moving rod pins.
I seriously don't know how this engine didn't sound aweful. Everything is falling apart internally.

got dark before I could get pics of crank and cam. Ill get them in the morning.

so question. not sure if anyone will know.
the cam I am running is this one

with the mopar valve springs suggested by another member on here.
and yella terra 1.6 roller rockers.

Does anyone know if I will need the specific comp cams timing set ? I was looking at the rollmaster (which seems to be impossible to find for sale) but wasn't sure if I would need to modify it in any way.
Not sure if timing is advanced by this cam. I do know I had to cut the ears of my distributor and either advance or retard the timing. I remember it was a pain to get it running correct. this time when I removed the distributor I cut a nice small groove to line it up perfect on the edge. (forgive me it has been 7 years since I built this motor. definitely a little more knowledgeable now but still learning)

You sure that the rod and pin aren't moving together and the pin isn't just moving in the piston?

Just got back from dropping everything off.
Machine shop showed me that its not the rod its the piston. sides moving. which is okay.

did not get many pics when the crank was coming out. I was in a rush.
