Ordered the rollmaster set from Russ,
Called the machine shop today. They said so far head has been pressure tested and is not cracked. So that's good. But the block hasn't been looked at just yet

So. The bad news.
Machine shop called.
the guy begins by telling me they magnafluxed and pressure tested the head and block. No cracks
the coating around the exhaust ports are getting white and going bad and the head should just be replaced.
.
Crank needs a touchup and cam doesn't need to be touched.

I need some info.
So because the head is going bad I want to replace it,
the machine shop guy explained that I have the 7120 casting with the bigger ports.
There is a head available in denver from ATK
but they cannot confirm if valve seats have been installed. its $430 +40 shipping
he explained if valve seats need to be installed it could risk going through a water jacket and ruining the head.
can somone shed some light on this. or if there is a trustworthy dealer

he also said I could replace it with the 0331 casting but the ports are smaller.

best options here ? thanks

I researched into what he was talking about. And it's the valve guides. They are needing to be replaced.
And apparently it's risky. The machine shop guy said installing them is risky. Could go through water jacket and ruin the head.

Valve guides aren't risky and won't go through into the water jackets.

Valve seats can be, but usually using a thinner diesel seat won't be a problem.

For the price of the ATK head it should be completely refurbed or new. Also, look at clear water cylinder head.

yep valve seats.
if he is worried about doing it, it doesn't exactly put me in confidence..
so options are, buy a new head. or have the seats redone which is the cost of a new head.

machine shop could not confirm if the atk head has had the seats and guides done... which is very worrying
I think im going to purchase from Clearwater. they have warranties too

Ben,

If you're still considering having a machine shop put exhaust seats in your head, I'd recommend using a
1.625 x 1.250 with a seat thickness/depth of 7/32.

With that exhaust seat you won't have any problems with breaking into water.

On a side note, hopefully you should have received the Rollmaster timing set that I shipped you.

Been busy with work and stuff, havnt had much time to work on her.
I did get the block back from the machine shop.
Waiting on more parts in the mail

And Russ, This timing chain is super beefy. I don't fear it failing anytime soon.
Also Ill post pics of the timing cover. the whole part where the tensioner should go is completely gone lol

Also. two questions.
since The timing cover is shot. I found one on ebay off a 99 4.0. Will that fit ?

With my 4.2 crank do I want the 4.2 or 4.0 main and rod bearings ?
I was going to purchase the clevite perfect circle.
thanks in advance.

Hey guys, Been at work at slowly cleaning up all these parts and painting. Ill get pics up shortly.
So after waiting for all the parts to return from the machine shop, I believe now I have absolutely everything bought or in shipping. except for the thrust bearing.
I am not entirely sure why but the machinist kept the crank thrust bearing to std. and all the rest of the journals to -010.
which makes for a pain to source one bearing since they come as a set for the clevite P series ones that I want.
I am going to do some more digging online and try to find someone who has a P series std thrust bearing.

The list. of Just Empty Every Pocket. J.e.e.p

New Cylinder head.
New oil pan.ATP (needs to be hammered out to fit the oil pump when it arrives)
New timing cover.Crown Automotive (the old one is missing the tabs completely for the guide) Pics to come.
Timing guide.
Roller master timing set.
Copper Expansion plug set.
Clevite piston rings 50514CP.030
Clevite main bearings MS1947P-010
Dorman Hamonic Dampener 594018 (594-018)
Dorman Idler Pulley
Fel Pro Complete lower end gasket set. CS81693
Fel Pro intake/exhaust gasket MS94790
MotoRad Thermostat (180degrees)
Anchor OEM motor mounts.
Fel Pro Head Gasket. 530SD
I think that is everything minus all the little stuff I picked up locally.
As soon as I can either find a thrust bearing at standard or buy a full set Ill get the major list of stuff up

Has anyone used the thrust bearing crown automotive sells ?
its ~$15 and would save me buying a whole clevite set for the thrust bearing alone.
anyone used their thrust bearing before ?

Your machinist is an idiot. He should be water boarded.
I'm dying to know why he didn't grind all the mains the same.

honestly I don't know either.
He was cheap. and had good reviews online.
The work he did looks good. just have no clue why he didn't take that thrust bearing down to -.010

hopefully the plasti-gauge will show good things.

Yeah I am emailing clevite directly to see if they will send me a single thrust bearing.

Got the whole weekend off. I will get some pics up. I painted the valve cover and timing cover black. and the block is getting painted white.
Should show the leaks easier that way.
