Pushrod & preload info needed

Hello all, first post here so I'll do a quick intro of my project.

Building a 4.7 for my 97 XJ; zero-decked with 26cc bulltear floating pistons on 4.0 rods, .047" gasket, and a 68-231-4 with stock valvetrain save for the springs.
I don't have my build sheet handy, so at the moment I can't give any info on the springs. :doh:
The block & head were resurfaced; my pistons stick above the deck an average of .004" each, give or take a couple thousandths.


Anyways, I'm trying to figure out what to do for pushrods.
I used a dial indicator on the oil hole, and after a dozen or so attempts I averaged .103" preload on the exhaust and .125" preload on the intake.

Is that normal, to have different numbers for the intake & exhaust?

The method I used while checking preload, was to rotate the crank until the corresponding cam lobe was pointing 180* away from the lifter; is this an acceptable way to do it?


Assuming I haven't made any grave errors so far, my plan was to run 9.575" rods on the intake valves and 9.590" rods on the exhaust valves, to give me .045" & .043" preload; respectively.
I'm using Comp cam lifters and their specification calls for .020"-.080".

Intake- 9.650 - .125 + .045 = 9.575
Exh. - 9.650 - .103 + .043 = 9.590

Am I on the right path here??

That sounds about right. Weird that you need that much different length pushrods.
Could always get an adjustable pushrod and check your lengths.

Yes, the intake and exhaust can be different due to the different base circle on the lobes or a dual pattern cam.

.465"/.485" int/exh

0.020" difference in lift and different base circles, So I guess that much difference in pushrod length makes sense.

I'm using Comp cam lifters and their specification calls for .020"-.080" preload.
So there is enough leway in the spec that same length pushrods could work.
