Mine's a 258 rod stroker as you already know and it's still going strong after 11 years and 80k miles.
I believe that the reliability concerns about the short rod stroker are being somewhat exaggerated, at least for the normal daily driver use that I put mine through. Even if a small part of the piston skirt does come out of the cylinder at BDC, there's still enough piston length remaining inside the cylinder to maintain piston stability.
