My 4.0 (2002 TJ) Has a pin knock or 'skirt slap' and I would like to do more than just a standard rebuild. As I look around the site my head starts to swim in all the numbers being tossed around. I understand what is being done, why its being done , however, how the differences effect the outcome and balancing them all out elude me.
Is there a 'Bullet proof" 4.6 setup? Or something close?
I understand the need for a good, well better than good machinist and builder, and maint on it after broken in.
Currently I have 35" 5.13 5sp trans 90% DD 10% trails (rock crawling)
I have looked into Golden ect...... But understand I can have mine done for less/better
Im in the Sacramento area, is there a shop nearby that does this work?

All of the 4.6L recipes are "tried and true" but long term reliability is largely down to accurate machine shop work, selection of good quality parts that are compatible with one another, careful assembly, proper break-in, and careful maintenance.
Find an engine builder who knows what he's doing. I'd second jsawduste's recommendation of Russ Pottenger.

If I were to do it all over again, I would have gone with Russ, but I had already started my engine before I knew about him. I mean, nothing beats the feeling of putting an engine together yourself, but it's a very stressful process because there are so many different ways to do a stroker, especially when you finally have it running and there are some noises that you're not sure are normal or not. You really won't be saving tons of money doing it yourself, I think a price was posted on how much Russ's engines goes for and it's not bad considering you'll get something custom made. I stopped keeping track once I reached $2000, but I also haven't returned these KBs that I have, but still, I don't think I saved a ton doing it myself. I don't regret building my stroker myself, but Russ would have been on the top of my list for options if I knew about him.
