Here are some cam shaft pics I took today(Sorry some didnt turn out real clear). I don't think it would be possible to mod the old style cam to work with the cam retaing plate.

Looks like the top picture is upside down. I think the retainer is a better idea, but I don't think you can use it with an aftermarket Cam.

Yes it is upside down, on an engine stand. Good eye.

Dont forget that you can use an image hosting company to host the pictures. This is the preferred method, and would allow you to post more than 3 images per post.

What gear set is that on the earlier cam?

JP performance. I got it off ebay. Rollmaster makes a simular set...also on ebay. The cam and crank gear are billet steel. The crank gear has 9 keyways for adjustment

Thats what I thought. Most likely going to get the same one.

I wonder if I could shorten the bearing surface on the old style cam to fit an adapter that made it work with the thrust plate and newer style gear?

If you could figure something out, that would be great. I would like to see something done to use the retaining plate. I looked at it a while, but then figured it wasn't worth my time or money. The spring and pin will work for what I am going to use my engine for.
I think the biggest problem is going to be the oiling hole and the pin one the front bearing surface. The newer style cam is longer from the front of the block forward. Also, as far as I know, no one makes a double roller timing chain for the newer cam.

Could you measure the base circle and the cam casting diameter between the 2 cams?
The 4.0 looks beefier

I'll measure when I get home tonight.
