I have a 98 4.0 and want to make it a 4.7, but I have no idea what to do. It's my first stroker and need some good info on what needs to be done and parts. It's a DD, but it's more offroad than anything so I want as much power as I can get put of a 4.7. I was thinking a 4.8 but I heard the engine would need sonic tested. I would appreciate any help. I just want to make sure I'm getting the most power for the money, and please feel free to dumb it down this will be my first engine. Thanks

Their are plenty of threads on this forum that will answer any of your questions if you just search for them. This site is a good read.

With a mild stroker build, There's not much of a noticeable advantage in 4.6, 4.7, or 4.8 displacement. Sure there's a negligible amount of power gained but it's petty in this type of a motor build. You will without a doubt notice the increase in crankshaft stroke though. Don't try to complicate things on your first engine build....Keep it simple with common piston sizes etc... The best thing to do is to take only as much needed to clean up the bores and select your parts and components wisely.

What he said. Also decide what your budget is going to be, add 20%, and you might be in the ballpark with the final cost.

Thanks. I think I will just do a 4.8l. That being said will I need to sonic test it? I know I need a 258 crank and rods. I want to build it for low to mid torque. Can I take cheromaniac poor mans stroker build list and just change piston size and a more aggressive cam and it work? I know it's going to cost but that's ok I just want it done right.

I suggest you follow the KISS principle but if you want something more powerful than a poor man's stroker, I think this one will suit your taste:
4.6L low-buck stroker
Jeep 4.2L 3.895" stroke crank
Jeep 4.0L 6.125" rods
Keith Black UEM-IC944-030 pistons
9.6:1 CR
CompCams 68-231-4 206/214 degree camshaft
Ported HO 1.91"/1.50" cylinder head
Mill block deck 0.020"
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
0.050" quench height
Ford 24lb/hr injectors for '96-'04 engines
264hp @ 4900rpm, 324lbft @ 3500rpm
It's basically a modified poor man's stroker with a higher CR (milled block deck) and a performance cam.

Why go thru the hassle with a 4.8? You will flirt with the motor potentially running hotter due to thin cylinder walls, and not to mention a custom piston size. I ran a 4.0 block at .060 over and it definitely ran warmer than std. bore. If your are building for torque you will not notice much of a difference in a slight bore increase.. Just sayin... 4.6 is easy!
