new stroker build, some issues

Post by danimal »

so i got my stroker in. it is a semi low buck build, silvolite pistons dished .075" deeper, block decked .035", comp 232 cam, ported head, 3 angle valve job, reground all the valves.
The jeep fires up and runs, but it seems to be a little rough, like a dead cyl. it isnt too bad, but definitely noticable. vacuum gauge shows about 19-20hg, it has a slight rapid flutter within about .5-1hg (between 19 and 20hg at idle). the injectors are junkyard ford blue tops. Any ideas? could the flutter and rough idle be a injector, or is a valve more likely?

Could it be a flat cam? You didn't say if you used a new cam, new lifters, did you keep the old stuff in order and re-use it, etc.

91, everything is stock except the stroker and the ford blue top injectors. i just got the thing driving, and it definitely has a major miss. feels like it's running on 5 cyls. i'm going to do some investigating in the morning

...start with the basics compression, spark, fuel and figure out which cylinder it is

thats the plan in the morning. it's been a rough day, had to pull the trans back out due to a slave cyl issue. I was mostly curious if ignition or injection issues would cause a slight flutter on the vac gauge.

well i ran a compression check. 150psi on all cyls.
sprayed around the injectors and intake with carb cleaner, no change. Seems like the idle changes every time i unplug a injector. Not sure where to go next.

ok all the plugs are somewhat black except one is slightly less black. Any ideas? you can see the difference.

for whatever reason that cylinder is a bit leaner but wow that other looks rich!

it was rich because i knocked the vac line off by accident for the fuel pressure regulator.

So i did some more testing today.
i had that injector tested... it flowed good.
I ran a smoke test. no intake leaks.
unplugging one injector or one spark plug at a time does make a difference on all cyls.

I'm at a loss. not sure what to do now.

Put the vac gauge back on. Un plug one injector at a time. Note the diff on the vac gauge. Is one different?

only thing i can think of is i reground the valves and valve seats (3 angle). this would make the valve sit a little higher in the head and reduce some pressure on the spring. could this cause the valves to float with my 232 cam? i'm running stock valves, springs, and retainers.it just seems weird that it does it in the entire rpm range.

also, i decked the block so my deck height is about .04" lower than stock. i'm running 4.2 rods which i think are about .045" shorter than stock.it did seem like it had decent preload, but i dunno.
