i'm coming up on my first oil change and was wondering what off the shelf oils people are using. did a quick search and nothing came up but i'm a little drunk and alot lazy so if i missed it sorry

Ive been using Valvoline VR1 10w30 since the 4.7 was born (minus the comp breakin oil). At first I also put in some ZDDP Plus, but I stopped that after the first 6 oil changes (2 were with breakin oil).

VR1 seems to be the best oil with the highest amount of zinc left for our flat tappets.

VR1 is good for off the shelf stuff.

I've been running VR1 10w30. Good off the shelf oil with high zinc, and it won't hurt your wallet to bad . Manufacturers part number VV205. Napa and Orielly's can order it in my area. Even though it is a racing oil, it does have enough detergents for a 3000 mile oil change. I contacted Valvolines Tech dept. and verified this. The Valvoline racing oil in the black bottle does not have detergents, and can't be used for long oil change intervals.

I'm not sure. They do maake a synthetic vr1 10w30. Oriellys has it on there shelf. I do believe its in a purple bottle, and its around $9.00 a quart...a bit to high for my wallet. I did buy it once thinking I could extend my oil changes. I called Valvoline about it and they still recommended 3000 mile oil change. So I just run the convensional VR1

Mobil 1 is a proven money-saver. On Volvo diesels it makes the difference between a 100,000 mile engine (fossil oil) and a 300,000 mile engine (synthetic). Other synthetics probably give similar results.
The most expensive oil you can buy is still cheaper than engine repairs!
