Re-Turbo Comanche

Post by turbojeeper »

typical story, i have bee lurking a while, reading allot and posting here and there. back ground on my. im 27. crew chief in the airforce. before i was an engine technician for jeep for 10 years. so on to my build......

its an 89 comanche, originally a 4cyl 2wd. now its a 6 cyl 4wd thanks to a 93 cherokee.

it has been turbo chargerd for about 3 years now. ebay special t4. dodge ram 5.9 injectors and a vortech fmu. its pushing 10 psi and has just over 300k on the clock.

plans:
42lb ford injectors
99 intake
mallory fpr
custom turbo manifold
88mm gt42
megasquirt
better fuel pump
larger intercooler

here are a few pics to get started

flange from boostwerks and sch 40 pipe from ace stainless

and the new turbo, sitting on the old

more to come soon!!

Here are a few more for ya. Went with the newer intake. Stock p/s pump and belt by the way. Manifold is all tacked up, only thing left is the cross over pipe to the turbo. And then a shot of where the turbo will sit.

Sorry for the slow progress. Been working 12's for the past 2 weeks. Here a pic from last night at the track. Welded the rest end and finally put the slicks on.

No, not yet. I have everything sitting here to do it. With it being my daily ive been trying to find an extra block to build but everyone wants an arm and a leg for one. My megasquirt is being built right now so first I am going to get the bugs worked out of it then get the engine built.

An arm and a leg for a 4.0 block, talk about inflation! Mines a Dd also so thats kinda what I'm doing only I'm stroken then the turbo (which I know nothing about) but I have a Garrett sitting in my closet begging to be put on the stroker!
I'll be watching your build thanks for posting the info and making me want to turbo my heep even more

Tell me about it. Cheapest I have found is $150 fire just a bare block. With a turbo it is a blast to drive. Mine is built for drag and street racing. Not a big offroader.

150$ is pretty much what I paid for mine and I spent a few hours of my time pulling it it did come with all of the internals,so I got a few spare parts I don't think 150$ is too bad as long as its a solid block to build off of considering a 4.0 long block is anywhere from 1000$-1500$ !
Did you tac weld your exhaust mani to the head ? Thats what it looks like in the picture and I had to do a double take...
Sorry for the stupid question I'm just trying to get a grasp on the turbo concept.

Its all good. Yea in the pictures it is just tacked together. Gonna get it tig welded when it's done. Megasquirt should be in my hands hopefully this weekend. Yea I'm just looking for a straight block. I can find long blocks all day here for $500 or less. Its slowly coming along. It gets dyno'd this friday on the current setup. So much going on at once.

Put it on the dyno tonight. 300hp and 368 tq at only 4200 rpm and 10 psi. Found out jeep has a speed limitrr. And this was in 99 degree weather.

Finally got the megasquirt. $250 ready to go. Now I have to decide whether to build a new harness or use the factory one.

Main harness. The computer will be mounted in the open cubby under the glovebox. The harness that's wrapped will go out under the hood. The others will stay and route under the dash.
