4.2 crank, best place to find?

Post by mikalcarbine »

Some junkyards want crazy prices for their 4.2 cranks (200+), I've seen some on CL going for sub 100 with rods (best deal IMO) but these are usually rare and it seems like no one wants to ship! Anyone know some other good spots to buy these, even new?

Has anyone tried one of the cranks from O'Reilly? Is there any disadvantage to them? I read that they have the correct casting number. There are a few places online that seem to have insanely expensive high performance cranks, there's no way I'm going that route though.

Napa had a crank with bearings for $190, add the 10% AAA discount and it's not that bad of a deal! Not sure about casting though

I've been sourcing parts for my build a while now and by far the crank was the hardest part to locate Napa / northern crank supply company/ auto zone/ Orieleys nobody could find one and if you want a later crank with the short nose it's even harder to find, i found a long nose 4 weight on craigslist for 85.00$ but it had to be turned .10/.10 rod and mains for $100
And I still had to buy bearings!!! My advice is if you find a decent price on a re-manned crank through Napa or whoever (jump on it ) it most likely will come with the correct rod bearings and wont need any machine work! If it comes with main bearings they wont work because you will need mains for the year of block you have! One thing to be cautious for is how much material was taken off to machine the crank ,its my understanding that anything more than .20 for bearings can become hard to find! On another note since I bought my crank there's been a few 258 engines pop up on craislist for around $300 and nobody seems to want to part them out, even if they did paying for machine work is a possibility!
Good luck!

I got my crank for FREE! in fact they guys loaded the whole 258 in the back of my truck when I wasn't looking! and to think I actually complained about it at the time!, the rods out of it are over the mountain in Muad'Dib's jeep right now! helped to pay for the gas to drag it home!

The rods seem much more expensive new, most places don't seem to carry these unless I'm looking for the wrong part numbers. I couldn't imagine paying $50/rod new, that would drive the cost of this up astronomically

I got a stroker crank from 505 performance. So far not impressed....the shipped it wrapped cardboard, there were some light scratches on two of the mains, it was supposed blueprinted and balanced. I will have my machine shop polish it and double check my measurements but when I checked it I got that it was at the minimum diameter to use for standard bearings. To me blueprinted is a little closer to the middle of the spec.

Found a crank and set of 707 rods from Alabama, $185 shipped, a little pricier than I wanted but they should be here soon!

Edit: I read the ebay auction. So, that is a new scat crank that has been turned .010"? Not a bad price for that.
