Land speed racing is a little different than other racing, although one of my friends told me a story of a guy who set a drag racing record with a 4 cylinder car. he had a 80lb flywheel. he just revved it up at the line and let out the clutch, the energy stored in the flywheel gave him the extra acelleration he needed.

If you have a land speed record car, and you are going 150mph in 4th at 7,500 rpm, when you shift into 5th you engine rpm will drop to around 5,000 which will be below your peak horsepower band. So the heavy crank and flywheel will help you to accelerate. If you ran an aluminum flyhwweel, the engine would probably bog down.
