Please help, i've searched and have not really found the info i'm looking for!

The info:
Bad valve guides / cracked head on the 7120 casting i had on my stroker. Was given an 0630 head for free, from the research i've done the only difference is there is no temp sensor on the 0630. I was told that i don't even need to use the temp sensor on the head, that the one on the water neck is good enough, but haven't found any info to make me 100% believe that.

Any recomendations or can someone point me to some good info on what i need to do?

I'm running a 99 engine in my 94 XJ.

The 99 head does not have the temp gauge sender in the head.
I tapped the thermostat housing and moved the sender to the thermostat hosuing. I had to splice in an extra ~20" of wire to get the harness to reach.

There are a few downsides.
1. The temp gauge swings from 180-250-210 on warmup, this only only happens when the thermostat opens for first time of the day. It's disconcerting, but not indicative of any real problem.
2. The sender is fragile, when removing the water pump pulley, be careful. The senders are cheap <$20.
3. The extra wire seems to make it read a few (3-5)degrees cooler than a laser thermometer say. Not an actual problem just something to look out for.

The upside is not having to replace a head if you screw up the drill and tap job.

Leaving it unplugged gives a 100degree indicated water temperature.
This value is not used by the ECU for anything, the ECU uses the temp sender in the side of the block.

The best solution is to drill and tap the flat on the back of the head where the sender should go.

t-stat housing would be ok too, iirc that is where the PCM's sender is on the earlier models though.

Use one of those radiator hose adapter things, but you would have to ground it some how or find a two wire sender that works with the gauge.

exactly where do i need to drill and tap on the head? The head is at a machine shop now getting a magnafluxed and then if it checks out getting a valve job. Sounds like something that would be best done by them.

My 1/96 0630 head has the port and sensor on the DS rear corner to feed the dash gauge, my dad's 6/96 has it too. Some 96's have a cap screw in the boss, and other 96's don't have the boss tapped at all. I'll let the 97+ 0630's speak for themselves, but am pretty sure that Jeep changed the dash temp gauge with info from the cts sensor in the t-stat housing instead of from the head. So there are different 0630s out there.

I did notice there is a bolt where the temp sensor was on mine, it was out of a 96. so i'm assuming its just plugged then? and i can put the temp sensor from my old block in place of the bolt that is in this one?

Yes, that would work.
