99+ Intake Manifold & Unichip Mods w. Dyno Results

Post by Comanche91 »

Got the 2001 WJ intake manifold mounted and the Unichip wired in on my 4.5L Hesco stroker and had the Unichip programmed and was dynoed at Hesco today; amazing results. The dyno peak HP vs. torque BEFORE readings last year were 207.5 HP @ 3950 RPM, torque was 243.0 at this RPM. Peak torque was 280 @ 3600 RPM. The AFTER reading, manifold only, was 219.5 HP @ 3916 RPM, torque at 294.9. The AFTER reading w. manifold and Unichip, was 261.1 HP @ 4400 RPM, with torque at 312.8. Peak torque was 345 @ 3500 RPM. All readings are at the rear rear wheel of course. :D

That's a HP increase of 53.6 (although at a higher RPM, 3950 vs. 4400) and a torque increase of 65 ft. lbs. at about the same 3500 RPM, even w. the 20%-25% power robbing AW-4. Just the updated intake w/o the chip gave impressive gains. Very worthwhile mods.

Yes, and that's all I'm going to do for now is imagine it Kyung. :D I think that low RPM bucking problem I experienced on the way home a couple of times is the AW-4 kickdown cable is mal-adjusted. So I'll try adjusting that that later. Don

Using the the 91 original OBDI ECU.

Darn my OBDII! And darn me not living near Hesco! Although I do have the intake and I never thougt it gave that much power. I never had the old one on the stroker, but its good to know the 99 is good for around 12hp on the new engine.

Just curious, how will the Unichip affect gas mileage?
Now I can be like all those other awesome people with more than one Jeep in their sig, but now I have to say one of them is sold:(

Actually the Unichip on the newer OBDI and OBDII is plug and play, according to Hesco. On the 91-92 OBDI it has to be hardwired in because of ECU pinout variations.

From what Ive read chips dont really do much for OBDII. I would love to hear otherwise. I just know it can get pricey. Im hoping I can get it on a dyno and actually have it tuned correctly. If you dont mind me asking what did Hesco charge you for the whole thing?

Which kit did you use? Does the 93-95 kit work? i don't see a listing on hesco's web site or uni-chips website for 91

EDIT: Never mind, i just read the post above stating that 91-93 has to be hardwired

Wouldn't a 95 ECU work on a 91 harness? Would the Plug and play version work on that?

No, the ECU pinouts are different apparently on the 91-92, thus it requires hardwiring in. We used the model Q chip. It's only eight wires and comes with a bypass plug should the chip fail. I've tried the motor w. the chip bypassed and though it's much better than before because of the new manifold, it's very obvious when the Unichip is out of the circuit.

The chip is $489 and hardwiring it in and dyno tuning was $150. PnP of course will be less. The only sure way to verify the gain is by before and after dyno tuning. I try to have a dyno run at Hesco annually since I put the 4.5L basic stroker in four years ago, or whenever I do a major performance mod. This was my forth run, and they are all stored in the Hesco computer, so when Lee prints them out you can see the comparisions. Thye original tracks started way down on the bottom of the page and have steadily risen, so you know exactly what the horsepower and torque costs. Beats the crap out of guessing what the olde butt dyno tells you...... :D

Those are great dyno numbers. What has been done to the engine...cam, pistons, valvetrain, etc...?

It started life four years ago as the standard 4.5L Hesco crate engine, .030 overbore (so I can go .030 more later if I have to), Hesco adj. fuel pressure regulator @ 46#, 53030591 Mopar 23.2 lb. injectors, and a Hesco RV-O-B cam, stock valve train. The internals are still the same.

Good question. TBD. Maybe :o or :D. I'm hoping the latter.
