anyone with forklift/LPG knowledge?

Post by vashxj »

well this is a long shot but i figured most people on here are pretty smart and come from all industries. im a forklift mechanic but i have a old 1975(around that) hyster s50c with a continental flathead 4 cyl. with a j&s model 50 carb in it. the problem is that it will start and run with the choke on but die when you let off. no one in my shop is old enough to have ever messed with these mainly because almost all forklift companies switched to impco fuel systems in late 70s. let me know if you have any ideas and by the way there is about zero imformation on these in the web and good luck finding a book

I've probably built about a 1000+ (LITERALLY!) engines for Hyster to run LPG, however I just built the engines, hardly NEVER messed with the fuel systems?, your engine is probably the "G163"?

Start with the basics, compression, spark, etc.

yes i belive you are right g162 or 163 i dont remember. its weird as hell i replaced the intake/exhaust gasket since the bottom bolts were loose, and i thought maybe i had a vac leak. cleaned carb, checked compression, ect. ive tried everything the diapham seems good. do you know what psi the fuel is supposed to be at by chance i have it set to about 6psi but thats about what all the impco systems use

i think i have it down to something with the fuel for some reason the diapham isnt opening after start up, there is a tube in the middle of the carb opening that catches the incoming air and pushes this diapham open which in turn pushes a needle valve to let fuel in, some how either im not catching enough air to blow it open (it should be ok i have 15in of vac) or the fuel pressure should be higher than other systems im familiar with

Yea the LPG fuel systems are foreign to me too?, all my experimenting with them was with the IMPCO type on the 4.3ltr V6's, the butterfly's are about the size of a nickle on the 2V mixer that HYSTER uses IIRC??, I held one wide open on the test stand to see what it would do!, IIRC? the free RPM @ WOT was only about 3200?, only parasitic load was the water pump.
