Pushrod Checking tool help

Tell me if this is correct.
Aligned the Timing chain marks together (this should put the #2 cylinder at TDC correct?)
Installed a brand new lifter (not oiled or anything)
Dropped in the push rod checker
Torqued down the stock stamped rocker.
Adjusted the checking tool until it made contact with the rocker
Measured the tool and add preload (.040 to .060)
Ok, does it matter if I check the exhaust side or intake side?
