Jeep Strokers

Hello, name is Monty and I am from Texas and have a couple of questions about my new 4.0 stroker motor. Here is the info on it

95 YJ 4.0 block with 88 YJ crank and rods. AX15 trans. I put this setup in my 88YJ using the ECM, wire loom, fuel rails, injectors and dist. out of the 95. New fuel pump and sending unit. We used the stock 95 4.0 crank and bore on block is 30 over. I have the dist set correctly but can not for the life of me get this motor it idle or even rev up. Sounds like it is to far retard on the timing. Tonight I even pulled the hold down clamp and bolt to see if I could advance or retard the timing. No change. Any ideas?

How was the cam broken in?

The Distributor in the 4.x doesn't control timing... so unbolting the Dizzy and turning it wouldn't do anything for you.

Have not even been able to get it running good enough to break the cam in. That is the link I used to index my distributor.

Did you degree in the cam?

I would have to check with my builder to be sure, but I am pretty positive he installed it like you would while building a stock 4.0. This was his first jeep stroker motor to build. Out plan going in was to keep it pretty stock untill I got the jeep running and had time to work any bugs out of it and then upgrade the performance as I felt was needed

Wrong flywheel ?

Check three times, and then when you're 100% positive you have it right, check again.

Could easily be accidentally 180 degrees off, you may have inadvertantly used the wrong alignment hole (most aftermarket rotors have holes for both the 2.5 and the 4.0, make sure you use the 4.0 hole). Especially if the timing seems "off," but you can hear it kind of catching and backfiring, at least then you know you have spark and fuel, it's just not timed right. Check the dizzy!

Check the dist at least a dozen times. Even called the mechanic I do business with to come check it this morning. Said timing was dead on. I do have the correct flywheel. It is the only flywheel for a 6cyl jeep I have with the timing notches on it. When the mechanic was here we did pull all the plugs and they are all fouled. Going to put new plugs in it and see what happens. If that does not help it I am pretty much stumped.

Well that didn't do a darn bit of good. Still fouling the plugs out. Going to check my crank sensor next.

Whats your fuel pressure?

I am not sure. Where would I need to check it at? The check valve?

Yes, with a fuel pressure gauge

87-90 renix flywheel on your 91-01 set-up would cause your symptoms. They both have notches, just not the same places or # of them.

I am running the flywheel off the 95 YJ 4.0 along with every wire harness out of that vehicle along with the ignition system and the fuel system. Basically what I did was remove everything from the 95 and installed it in my 88.
