Tight Quench can help with cooling as well as the Air/Fuel Mixture to promote an even burn. If you have an uneven burn you could potentially create a hotspot in the combustion chamber which could result in Detonation. The cooling effect also helps keep these potential hotspots from detonating.

Our Compression Ratio FAQ is also worth a read and covers the above:

If it feels right, then STROKE it!
You're lucky that hundred shot of CAPS LOCK didn't blow the welds on the forum!!

All being equal and unlimited money it makes sense to insure your quench height is around 0.040" then build your engine around this dimension. Here's a link that will shed some light on the topic but as you would expect does not give a defined answer. Unfortunately I've only found directional data and information but no magic formula. Some examples that work are

Stock 4.0 liter SCR 8.8, DCR 7.47, Quench 0.073" - No ping
4.7 liter stroker SCR 9.9, DCR 8.5, Quench 0.043", Elevation 5500 ft - No ping
DCR 8.5, Quench ~0.043", under load climbing elevation >500ft - slight ping (example from Muad'Dib)

Careful, you are standing on the edge of the Jeep Stroker Vortex, one step closer and your inexpensive build just got expensive.

Ok, I see the importance of both. I'm going to wait till i talk to the machinest thats doing the work for me to decide what to do. I still don't know if he has to shave the head or block. I realize that i'm on the edge of getting a good running engine and may have to do something to relieve some of the compression to get it. Even tho i'm limited on money there's no sence putting it together if it's not going to run right.

Good, let me know where you end up going and ultimately, how your engine performs!
