Comp cam 68-232-4 valve springs?????

Post by Reeb »

Have a 1997 Im installing a comp cam 68-232-4 in I was told by comp cam that the mopar P5249464 valve springs P4529218 valve locks and P4452032 valve spring retainers wold work with this cam. Machinist told me they won't work unless the valve seats and valve guilds are machined down The stock spring hight is 1.64 he said to make them work they would have to be machined down so they will have a 1.750 installed hight. I've read on here people have been getting away without doing this. I don't want to wipe out my cam lifters and so on what do you guys think?

Your machinist is wrong. They install at 1.64" and have a seat load of 110.

Are you running this cam and valve spring setup? If so how many miles do you have on them?

If you look at the notes on Summit Racing, they say valve springs are recommended, but then below it says, "Notes Recommended valve springs for 1964-1988 applications"

I take that to mean you only need different springs if you're running an 88 or older head.

The spread sheet floating around the net says the stock 4.0 cam from like 91 to 97 has .424" valve lift. You're not looking at a whole lot more than that with the cam you mentioned.

Took my head to another machinist tonight he pulled it apart right in front of me checked the springs said yep they will work. Sorry I'm stubborn when it comes to motors I build have to see stuff with my own eyes.

I have one small correction to my last statement. The 4.0 H.O. cam had .424" valve lift through 1995. 1996 and up had a little less lift, and I read somewhere that the 96 and up springs won't handle as much lift as their earlier couterparts. Of course that last part is hearsay, so don't anyone take it for fact without researching.
