First stroker, a little bit of clarification re cams/spring.

Hello,
this is a fantastic forum, got so much info from it so far.
The reuse/ where to by list I saw on one of the other posts is fantastic.
I'm looking at building a "low buck" stroker, it is a '96 zj engine that will be going into a auto XJ.
I have the 4 weight crank with the long nose.
I'm looking at using a comp cams 68-231-4 or 68-232-4 not quite decided on that yet.

all the detail for the comp cams seems to be for the older 4.2 engine, I know alot is interchangeable between the engines but can someone please verify that the recommended comp cams springs #926 are good for use the a 4.0 stroker build?. or are some other springs better regarded?
Also apparently comp cams require 4.2 timing kit/ setup ( i can only assume that it is different from a 4.0 set up- I don't know).
my donor engine is missing the cam sprocket, timing chain, washer, bolt and any springs or pins that are supposed to be with it.
what will I require to get the comp cams cam installed, other than a new timing set (and bearings)?

The CompCams 926 springs are too stiff IMO. Use the Mopar Performance 5249464 springs instead.
You can get the Cloyes dual roller timing set from Summit Racing, and the cam bolt/spring/pin plus the washer from Hesco.

You can also get the cam bolt, spring and pin from Morris 4x4 for half the cost of Hesco;

*I have no ties to Morris. First time I ever dealt with them was a week ago for that exact part. Shipping was quick and I think they only charged 2 bucks for shipping.

Morris 4x4 is great!! I have bought a number of things from them with no trouble at all and talking to their phone person is good too.

Plus, they are a Christian company too, if you care

As far as I can tell the comp cams springs & retainers are $100
and for the mopar performance springs and retainers you are looking at $260. that is a serious difference.
this is a crawler/ daily driver, not a competition anything. Does the stiffness of the comp cams springs rob the engine of horse power?

The stiffness destroys your cam lobes and lifters.

The springs Comp sells for the 6 cylinder Jeep are for the old 4.2 engines. They are entirely wrong for a later 4.0!
The old 4.2 has a 1.8" installed height, and the 4.0 springs need a 1.64" installed height..... With a coil bind of 1.140", they would work to 0.440" of lift, but the spring pressure would be MUCH too high.

I find it sad that a major company like Comp even has these springs listed for a 4.0. An unwary customer could destroy his engine by using those 'recommended' springs! :smack:

I searched thru countless spring charts looking for an affordable drop-in replacement spring and eventually just chose stock springs and picked a cam that would work with them.

thank you very much for that.
I could not for the life of me figure out why guys, who in other ways appeared to be price sensitive (as am I generally) , kept opting for the mopar springs.
