FSM calls for loctite 518. None of the parts stores around me carry loctite brand. What is best to use?

On which bit?

I've always used the later (1996-up) one-piece moulded gasket (dry) and dropped the new RMS in clean engine oil before I started tearing things down - let it soak until you install it.

FSM says to put a touch of RTV on the ends of the seal, but I've not bothered - that's why I soak it.

Haven't had any trouble, just don't install the seal backwards.

FSM calls for a anaerobic sealant, loctite 518 which i found in permatex brand part number 51813

I know - where does it say to use it? That's the part I don't recall (often, the two-piece moulded rear mains want it between the ends of the seal halves. The old "rope" seals just get trimmed and run.)

I don't like to do it, because I don't know if it's going to get into anything or not. Even if you use just a pinpoint, you can't quite be sure where it's going to end up (but it usually stays put.)

Ergo, I modified the procedure slightly. I've done it the way I've described a number of times now, on different vehicles, with no ill effect.

Although, LocTite #518 Gasket Eliminator is good stuff - it's saved me on jobs where I couldn't find the gasket I needed (I used to be an industrial mechanic, and usually ended up working on equipment older than I am.)

taking a stab at it, i think i remember reading mitchell ondemand saying to put a dab or two where the two halves meet on the main cap. but when i did mine, i didnt bother either, just soaked it and installed it. never had an issue
