A quick update. Lil K reported that the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero, triggering a check gauges light on the dash. He's not mechanically inclined, but he's had some things drilled into his head - i e - shutdown immediately with low oil pressure. Oil levels were fine, so he drove it home and reported no other problems. But I saw the same thing happen when I had to move the WJ a few days ago. It quickly drops to zero, stays there for a few seconds, quickly rebounds and seems to hold steady again just above the mid point (40?). The oil level is good, so I'm guessing this is a bad sender. It's possible that it's aerating due to our mad scientist efforts on the pickup to pump connection, but I think I'll start with the easiest, cheapest and most likely culprit first.
