87-06 is the 4.0 production!
But they also made the 4.2L in 88 I believe, so you need to get the vin off the block, post it and I'll let you know what you've got!
Anyway, any 4.0 block is interchangeable! You may/may not need to tap some of the holes on some blocks..like a 91+ block needs to be tapped for the knock sensor if you put it in a 87-90 ect. Theres very minor things like that but yup they are interchangeable with very minor works!

91 was the start of the HO engine.

Yes. Keep in mind that the '87-'90 Wrangler had the AMC 4.2 engine and the YJ only adopted the HO 4.0 in '91 (with 180hp/220lbft). If your '88 core was from an '87-'90 XJ, it'll be a Renix 4.0. If it came from a YJ it'll be a 4.2.

Matter of fact, just noticed it last night.
My 1987 block was stamped with a Chrysler badge and said 4.0L stamped/cast right on it lol..Check driveside of the motor around around 4th or 5th cylinder.
Blocks build date was 12/15/87, also stamp/cast into the block so idk why it was stamped Chrysler vs AMC.

I've used a renix block with HO parts. The only thing that I found missing was the ignition coil mounting bosses that are cast into the 91+ HO block. Other than that, all brackets and such swapped right over. You'll just have to relocate the coil.
