Please HELP!! 4.6 Won't stay running...

Post by cigarluvr »

Well, I got the engine in and went to start it. She fired and then died...fired up, then died...over and over, she would crank, fire, die...she is basically running out of gas. Inspected everything. I have plenty of pressure from the pump. I started looking around and found the #5 and #6 injectors (rebuilt Ford Blue Tops) leaking at the rail. Pulled them out, put new o-rings on, put them back in and...crap!!! Still leaking...please help...I need to get her running this weekend, and I am scared that the continual fire and die will mess up my cam...do i need to worry?

How long does it run before it dies? Check the fuel pump ballast resistor. I had bumped mine and a terminal came loose causing the exact same symptoms that you're describing. And of course fix your fuel leaks! :D

It will run upto 1000 rpm then die. About 2-5 seconds or so. If I touch the gas pedal, it dies. My fuel leak ended up being fuel residue from the shrader valve. And where is this ilusive ballast resistor? I have a 93 ZJ...

Here is a pic of where the dizzy is sitting now. The mark closest the grommet is where the #1 plug wire is. The second is the 3cm mark as per Dino Savva's site. Opinions? Do I have it right or a tooth off?

its hard to say by looks. but if it were me i would move it one tooth counter-clockwise and try it, and if it does nothing move it in the clockwise direction 2 teeth and try it.

Ok, so I reindexed the dizzy both ways...no joy. Still hard starts, run for about 5 seconds then dies. I'm at my wits end. I go in for shoulder surgery tomorrow so so i was hopin I could figure this out. Starting to sound like a fuel delivery issue.

What else did you do while the engine was out? That MSD coil looks new. I would try the stock coil.

Other than completely rebuilding it into a stroker, not much. I'll give the Oem coil a go. Thx

Have you watched the fuel pressure while it is running for those few seconds?

Here's a pic of the fuel pump ballast resistor. It is normally white ceramic looking with two wires attached. It's most likely mounted on the drivers side fender somewhere. Make sure the connections are good. On the initial key on it gets full voltage to bring the fuel pressure up quickly. After startup, the resistor steps down the voltage to the pump to lessen noise. If the resistor or connections are bad it will start and run until it runs out of fuel pressure then die. When I unknowingly bumped the wire loose, it started and ran for about 3 secs and died.

You can just bypass the ballast resistor.

Thanks for all the advice. I haven't had a chance to look at the fuel pump ballast, thats next on the list of things to look at. I was wondering though, could removing the evap canister cause this to happen? I wanted to get rid of the ugly carbon canister so I just dyked off the vacuum connections and capped them off. Does this system need to be intact for the fuel delivery system to work properly?

Reinstalled EVAP System, still nothing. Thought that this would work. Reindexed dizzy a couple times. Nothing... Searched and searched for this fuel pump ballast...I am not 100% sure that ZJ's even have one. If they do it is definitely not in the engine compartment. I have a fuel pressure test gauge coming. What should my fuel pressure do when I turn the key on? Also, I've searched and searched the web for this fuel pump ballast for the ZJ to no avail. Anyone out there have an idea of where it may be?

I am really starting to get get frustrated...please help!!!
