Whay not just go with a gen III 7.0L, or the supercharged version? I think you guy are a little off topic. I am not suggesting that anybody should pull out their stroker and replace it with the chevy motor, I was saying that it is a reasonable alternative. I agree that the stroker could probably produce about 10% more torque than a Vortec 4200, but not at all RPMs. However the Vortec can rev about 20% higher and does produce more overall hp. If you wanted the same or better off the line performance from a Vortec 4200 than a stroker, it would only require the correct selection of your rear end ratios. If you went from a 3.73 to a 4.10 it is a 10% change. Most people seem to go with larger than stock tires on their Jeeps and at some point could improve performance by changing the final drive ratios. The 10% change would give similar off the line acceleration, if you went with a 20% change, the Vortec would beat the stroker off the line and have the same top speed.

So the Vortec has a slight hp edge and the Stroker has a slight torque edge, but the Vortec also reduces weight and gets better gas mileage. Cost wise is probably around the same (boneyard motor vs a stroker) so yea it is not a brand new motor. In the end i think the lower operating costs is the real factor that sets the Vortec 4200 apart.

And Just when you thought the thread was at its end, I thought i would show some of the performance potential of the 4200. Here is a video of a 1950 chevy sedan with a stock motor doing a sub 14 second quarter mile.

Here is a post i received from another board , he is running 8lbs of boost on a stock engine. :

Hi All,

I have a 69 Camaro that I have transplanted an 05 4.2/4L65E combo with a turbo making 470HP/450FTLB at 8 lb of boost. Am in the process of building an 06 engine to live with 15lb of boost. My goal is 600HP/600ftlb -- keeping my fngers crossed. Had to fab almost every piece on the engine, but had great fun doing it.

Here are some pictures of a guy installing one into an Iroc Z. You can see how the turbo setup is easy to install on the passenger side.

Here is my point, If you build a stroker and get 260-270hp out of it, you done, you built the engine. You could turbo it, but performance is limited because of cylinder flow, and the plumbing is hard because of the non crossflow head. Look at the first picture above, doesn't look too hard to fabricate, and the exhoust pipe ends up in a good location for most jeeps, i guess the exception would be the CJ7 and eariler wranglers, but 1987 and up wranglers, MJs XJs Grands, it would all work well.

Probably your next question is, well if you think it is such a great idea why don't you do it? I will, but currently working on the Turbo setup for the Bonneville truck, and i can only handle one project at a time.
