94 4.0 to 98 4.0 eng swap???

Post by ff18wife »

Hi all,
New to the forum. Got a 98 JGC 4.0 6 cyl with a bad eng. A friend is practically giving us a 94 cherokee w/ a 4.0. Need to know the details for swapping? is it an "even" swap? if not, what needs to be changed? ANY input/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. :)

These engine blocks vary greatly. :nono:

Several folks have attempted to make the swap but; the water pump is physically different, as are the motor mounts and your accessories mount differently. I would seek out another 4.0L from another similar year JGC or Wrangler same as your JGC date range.

XJ's and MJ's have the distinction of being alone to themselves in the 4.0L Jeep engine world.
I have a 4.6L STOKER in my 2000 Jeep Wrangler with 4.5" lift on 35" BFG MT and 4.56:1 gears.

Ok, then can someone please give me the correct year/make/vehicle model of what engines that would fit in my 98 JGC 2wd 4.0 6cyl.? That would help me tremendously in my search for another motor. Thanks!!!! :)

Here's another scenario... if I take the WHOLE engine/trans assembly from the 94 cherokee sport 4x4, would it bolt up and plug into my 98 jgc 2wd chassis and wiring harness? ps - don't care if the 4wd works, just trying to get it done.

One of those articles states that there is something different about the 1998 ZJ block. Don't know how true or what that is.
