Swapping ECU's

Fairly straight forward question. Would any ECU from another '98 TJ work in my '98 TJ? I've narrowed a problem down to either the ECU or the SAFC I've installed. If I need to swap ECU's, do they have anything weird about them like need VIN #'s to match or not mixing auto and manual ECU's? Thanks!

I would try to fine one with the same part number, but other than that you can have your PCM replragrammed to the VIN and mileage of the vehicle. I don't think its necessary though. You do need to worry about if you have the Sentry key system. Don't know if it was an option in the TJ or not.

Wonderful. I don't have the Sentry key so no worries there. IIRC the mileage is stored in the cluster, not the ECU, correct? I think my buddies came with a kph speedo/odometer from north of the border and he swapped it out for another cluster and the other cluster had the same miles as when it came out of the american TJ. I'm not worried about the ECU having a matching VIN for having a matching VIN's sake. I likely will never sell it. I'm just worried about the thing running correctly. Thanks for the input!
