Baby made me proud last night

Post by gradon »

I was driving from Silver Spring to my parent's house in Bellefonte(10mi outside State College) late last night and was on 322 averaging 80+mph(I like the 3-3.5Krpm peak torque band). I see a car with blue lights ahead entering 322. He was driving 75mph so I as I was creeping up on him, I notice it's a lowered '00+ acura integra with at least a cat-back. Anyhow he didn't want me to pass him(I was in left lane, he was in right), so he gunned it. I was expecting this so I hit it too, flipped the speedo kill switch, and walked him hard. I love my stroked XJ!

you know, ive heard nothing but how the ax15 is very much a truck trans and not good for racing, but after doing a swap at work the other day (ax15 for ax15, something broke), ive reconsidered my t5 only outlook.it was in a 93 cherokee laredo with a stock (and almost worn out) 4.0. it had some good balls to it, and didnt shift too bad at all i found. also everyone seems to sing the praises of its strength

I've got 147K on my AX15, the only issue I have is that last fall I changed the oil in it, I used REDLINE "MT-90", it's too thick! it shifts hard, I need to change it, I'll put the RedLine "MTL" in it, then it should shift fine.

I've owned 4 manual(1 ba10, 3 ax15) 2wd 2dr 4.0 XJs in 17 years: an 88 that got t-boned, a 92 that I had from 142-277k and sold to a friend that took it to 295k before he sold it, a gray metallic 94(my favorite colored XJ) that I rolled at 75mph(that was an experience), and now a green 96. I've bought, fixed, temporarily used, and sold as many 4wd 4drs. I've never had an issue with them and I'm not easy on them. I've never thought that they were truckish trannies. I feel the Hurst shifter is a must(~30% shorter throws) and I use Redline MT-90(might have to try out the MTL). Current setup is 4.10s w/ 27" tires, so the ratios are too close atm. Maybe somewhere down the line I'll get to experience the nv3550(00-01 XJ) or find a nsg370 6-sp from an 04-06 TJ.

The NV3550 was also installed in the 2000-2003 Jeep Wrangler. You are going to notice a dieseling noise or throw out bearing type noise with the NV3550 compared to the AX15 when the clutch is out and the trans is out of gear. Otherwise, I would say they are bulletproof with a 4.0L and I will soon find out with them being behind a 4.6L STROKER. From what I have read they are put behind small block V8's so, I would think they will hold up fine.
I have a 4.6L STOKER in my 2000 Jeep Wrangler with 4.5" lift on 35" BFG MT and 4.56:1 gears.
