Jeep Strokers

Hello,

Im new on here and I have been doing a lot of reading and researching as I get ready to start my rebuild.. First off..

I have an 83 CJ7 with an AMC 232. I have always wanted to put a 4.6L in my CJ so I started aquiring the necessary parts as I go. I have 2 block/head combinations that I picked up in a package deal. First being a 95 the other a 00. They were just the short blocks and head assembly.

I also picked up an 85 CJ AMC 258 complete.

I plan on putting a Clifford Intake on and reusing my Weber 38/38 on the engine instead of going with Fuel Injection. Can anyone give the pros/cons to using a carb on the stroker???

I also like the lope of a bigger cam such as the Crower Baja Beast .282 duration. What head adjustments, etc would I need with such a longer duration / higher lift cam???

Lastly, When I got the blocks, they didnt come with any of the pulleys, brackets, etc for the accessories. I dont really care to run a serpentine. Is it possible to put all of the AMC258 pulleys, brackets, and accessories on the 4.0L block?? Are the external front faces the same (timing cover, etc) on both AMC 258 and 4.0L blocks??? I will be only running an alternator and power steering. I am going to even dump the fan and go electric.

from what i have read, it is not possible (without alot of work) to use 258 brackets and accessories. not sure on the water pump, timing covers are very close if not identical (ill see if i can dig up my comparison shot), and the main reason the alternator wont work is that the bosses used for 258 alternator brackets are not present on 4.0s. at least this is the case for small body amc cars. i have the alternator bracket for my 12si sitting downstairs with my stroker parts but have not had a chance yet to check and see for myself.

im kinda on the same track as you, with belt routing and whatnot, as is like to use my 12si alt, instead of a jeep one, and ditch the power steering, perhaps in favour of a chev tensioner that may bolt in to the intake. (reminds me, i need some measurements of items i dont have)

id do a search for alternator and see if you can find a build post from a member here who bolted (with some fab work) a delco cs series alternator in place of the a/c compressor up high on the pass side of the engine.

heres my comparison shot of the timing covers. the 258 one is green. thought i had a water pump one but i dont.

Don't use the 00 head as they are prone to cracking unless you see "TUPY" between the #3 and #4 cylinder valve springs.

Fuel injection= better idle, more power, better driveablity, etc.

That lope you like will kill your low end torque. That cam wouldn't start to really come alive until after the stock rev limiter and into the dangerous harmonics. You are better off not using such a larger cam and its referred to as "over camming an engine". Also, uf you went with fuel injection in the future it may not play well with that cam.
