harmonic balancer keyway

So while I was trying to find TDC to install my distributor in my new stroker, I saw that my Harmonic balancer mark was way off from the timing numbers (1/4 off) then I remembered while installing my HB that it and the crank had room for a keyway, but no keyway. since it doesn't have a key, can the HB actually turn faster/slower than the crank? Also, Im using my old HB and I didn't install my oil slinger. Is it time to tear apart my HB and buy a key?

Also could this be why my engine stumble at 2000-2500 rpm?

If Iunderstand you correctly...there is no key between the HB and the crank snout...just press fit friction.....That will not work. You must take off the balancer...install the key into the crank and then reinstall the balancer. Do it soon or relative motion (rotation) between the crank and balancer will damage the mating surfaces. You will need a harmonic balancer puller to get it off without damage.

Also...you have to pull off the timing cover to install the slinger so don't bother..the newer engines don't have the slinger installed either. The new /only replacement factory balancer for any year is a hair deeper to account for no slinger thickness but since its only like 1/32 thick I don't think it will throw off the alignment of the serpentine belt
