So I hear that some engines use an oil slinger and some don't. I've got a 97 block with a 12 wt crank. Do I need a slinger or not? Also, which harmonic balancer should I purchase? A 258 model or a 97 4.0 (which is what the block is)

A 4.0L balancer for your year vehicle is what you want.

If you get a Mopar balancer, remove the oil slinger. If you get an aftermarket keep it. I would recommend a Powerbond balancer over other aftermarket ones. Dorman is made in China and the Professional Products didn't come with a timing mark. Regardless of which one you get have your machine sop balance it. Everyone I had was out of balance to some extent.

I was told by Jeep that if you use a Mopar balancer, that there was a TSB stating not to reuse the slinger.
Confirming Silvers' previous post.

good. I'll get the Mopar one and have it balanced. No slinger is one less thing to worry about . Thanks guys.
