to cam or not to cam?..and others...

Post by rrocket1 »

ok so i have a 96 xj 4.0 H.O. and i want to build a motor for more power. but this is my DD so it still needs to pass inspection. i basicly have a complete extra engine from a 98 to work with. i was thinking a hotter cam, pistons rods, 2000+ intake mani headers and bored throttle body. i already have an exhaust system and cool air. i just dont know if something like this would set off the check engine and not allow me to pass inspection especialy with the cam.

and if anyone has other performance ideas that would be cool

Depending on yuor cam choice you should be ok. I put a comp can 68-232-4 in my mostly stock 4.0L and it ran great.. a bit more power and no engine light. The intake will not set off an engine light. Basically before I went to 4.6L I had a 98 head, CompCam 68-232-4 cam, MP springs, retainers, locks, 62mm throttle body, Thorley header, Gibson exhaust, cone filter, etc. No engine light and a nice gain.

Whats this about piston rods?

I wouldn't bother swapping used pistons over.

I would recommend the Comp Cams 232, or a Mopar cam if you can find it. Of course there are many more cam manufactures out there with many different cams.
