.040 over reasonable stroker combo?

Post by hflmike21 »

Background I purchased a 1990 Cherokee Limited. Motor had 3 bad pistons so I was planning on a low budget stroker or a poor man stroker. If I had to rebuild it I wanted to pull some power and torque out of it. Ive already port and polished the head as well as the intake (both Renix) as well as I was going to mount a 62mm HO TB to the intake with a stock cam 4.2 crank and rods with a z677ap pistons....I have read about strokers almost every night for over 2 weeks.

Well I took the block to the machine shop and they said that the block is so bad they MIGHT be able to bore .040 over but might have to take it to .060. Well as many know that changes the build. Is there a cheap combo out there that will allow the .040 over without having to dish the pistons more or buy the 419.00 each keith black pistons? I cant really grasp the whole method so was really focusing my lookups on recipes that use .040 over with off the shelf pistons that werent an arm and a leg. This jeep is just a trail rig for fun. Building a 5,000.00 or heck even a 2,500.00 motor isnt my goal. Any help or a point in the right direction would be helpful.... Ive already been to Dinos writes as well as others. Im (what I feel) at a dead end.

Yeah, just go with that combo. Even if you have to overbore +0.060" the SCR will be 9.4:1 without decking the block and that's fine with the stock cam, though you might find yourself using 91 octane gas most of the time. If you deck the block, each 0.010" you take off will raise the SCR by 0.2:1 and you might find yourself in ping city with the stock cam.

So far so good 524 miles about to do 2nd oil change and all sounds great and runs great. It’s been a fun project... Some issues were a little scary but overcame them. Engine seems very forgiving either that or I was better at a first time complete engine rebuild than I thought. Thanks again to Dino for all the info that was out there in website as well as these forums. I’ll keep trying to report back as time goes on and this jeep sees some trail time in the woods... Next I need to lift and put some 33's on it. Been talking to many in the jeep club I belong to about them building a stroker. I have passed on this forums url as well as some of the knowledge I have learned. I hope this will help people..

My combo by the time it was all said and done was the following

Jeep 4.2L 3.895" stroke crank
Jeep 4.2L 5.875" rods
Sealed Power Z677CP40 bore pistons
Stock Renix 4.0 camshaft
Ported and polished renix cylinder head with HO TB attached via homebrew adapter
Mopar/Victor 0.043" head gasket
Decked block .008
Venom High Performance Fuel Injectors (amazon) - 24lb/hr injectors with stock 39psi FPR for '87-'95 engines,
