Jeep Strokers

OK....here we go!!! Got most of my parts ordered and all the main stuff. Starting to build the bottom end. I'll get pics up as parts come in. I am going to try and keep a good "DIARY" of my build here. Anyone please add any advice or whatever to help me out! This is my first Jeep build! Mostly build SBC.

The block
89 Cherokee, bored .030 over, zero decked, running a main gridle, 4.0L rods, KB pistons with 21cc dish, Clevite bearings, stock water pump, 258 crankshaft turned .010, 258 harmonic balancer (want to keep the V-belt),

Head
89 Cherokee, home-job port and polish, stock valves, BBC 1.7 roller rocker arms, home made stud gridle (will show pics when i get them), mopar performance head gasket

Cam
Cam Style Hydraulic flat tappet, Basic Operating RPM Range 1,400-5,700, Advertised Intake Duration 262, Advertised Exhaust Duration 270, Advertised Duration 262 int./270 exh., Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.493 in., Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio 0.512 in., Valve Lift with 1.7 rocker arms 0.524 int./0.544 exh., Lobe Separation 111,

Intake
Clifford Performance intake, Holley 470 truck avenger carb.

Exhaust
Clifford Performance going to thermal wrap it, 3.5in x 16in Schoenfel race muffler (probaly will be loud)

For us FI guys, we like the 7120 and 0630 heads, cause they flow better than the 2686(renix: 87-90) heads, but I'm assuming the clifford intake was made to work with the 2686? If so, use the 2686 head as you plan, but if not, I'd recommend a newer one. Also note that you want a pre-87 258 crank that has a longer snout so you can use that v-belt hb. I used the 4.2 rods and 4.0 style pistons on my build, but would prefer the longer 4.0 rods and kb/custom pistons instead(some day I'll make a boost-worthy build with the eagles I have), so good choice. Oh yeah, .030" over is a 4.6l; you need to bore .060" over to get the 4.7l.

Yeah...its going to be a 4.6L.....my bad.

CRANKSHAFT:
crankshaft was jacked up by my buddy when he took off the balancer, messed up the threads (hard to find good help now a days) asked the machine shop to put in a heil coil, they said the could but would be cheaper to swap out the crank. It was going to be $175 for them to turn it and fix the snout. $125 to swap the cranks. it will be a 3.89 stroke turned .020 on the rods & .010 on the mains and ready to go. They didnt say how many counterweights it will have. I am assuming a 12wt, I am goint there tommorrow to find out.

BLOCK:
at the machine shop getting hot tanked, bored .030 over and new cam bearings. block # 53005535, amazing no cracks thats kind of rare up here in alaska on old motors!

HEADS:
this is a interesting one. The Comp Cam kit I got is the wrong one. Like it was mentioned in a previous thread that the cam and everything fits but the keepers will not fit correctly on a 4.0L heads. So I am going to use the original head off the 258. I am doing this because i already have a good header and intake that i know will fit and the credit card is getting close to the maxed out point. Not looking for a screaming motor somthing with some torque and drivable so i think i will be ok. Dont know if this has been done but i think it will work and run fine.

Distrubutor:
Just got a call from the wife, it is here!!! It is from CRT performance, their AMC 4.0L kit. comes with wires. Not a bad deal for an HEI.

JEEP:
Been preping the jeep for the swap. I should have washed it before i let it sit. scraping off old dried mud to get to bolts is no fun. I'll tow it to the car wash once the motor is out and repaint the engine bay. On a side note, It took me the better part of a weekend to get the 4.0L out of the 89 cherokee. It took me 3 hours to get the motor out of the CJ-5 and 1 of those hours was messing around taking off the fenders.

So come to find out my motor will be a 4.7L or 4.66L!!! When I took the block to the shop I just told them to bore it out .030 over. I was under the impression that the block had not been bored any. Well it has been. So me and the shop manager sat down and talked about everything I am wanting to do, he was pretty interested in it because he has never heard/done this before. We ran all the #'s and the pistons I have on back order are .030 the wrong size. Called up summit and the .030 pistons havent shipped out yet. They were cool and got them changed over the .060! Should ship out Feb. 4th.

On top of that my landlord threatend to kick me out if i dont get my dirty Jeep off of her property. I guess in the lease it says I cant do any maint. in the garage. Oh well.....while the engine is at the shop, I'm going to have to clean up and move shop to my buddies garage!
