New Guy!

Post by JimM »

Hi all, new guy here!

I'm Jim, from Chicago, and I joined up here because I got a nice lil 2000 Jeep Wrangler that I drive to work in, and tow behind my motorhome. It's got 218,000 miles on it, the the lil 4.0 is kinda tired.

I'm trying to decide if I want to swap it (a GM 5.3 w/4L60e would be real tasty....) or rebuild it (I suppose I really don't need 300 HP, and the computer stuff on an LSx swap would be a nightmare) If I rebuild it, stroking it seems a no brainer since you can do it with stock parts.

Where I really got questions is heads, cam, and breathing. When they say "that AMC6 is torquey" they really mean "it don't make no steenking power cause it can't breath" (bear with me... my "regulars" are an 04 silversado SS, and a 68 camaro with a 383 (stroked 327) and TKO 5 speed, a solid 12 second street car...lol.)

So what can be done to get some air in and out of these things?

Well, as always it depends what you want to spend ;) Aside from the port n polish route, There is hesco's aluminum head, but it's like $1800 iirc
Cams can be a touchy subject as most are a little noisy, and rollers are pricey.

Well...............You could put a turbo on it and just MAKE it happen

money isn't really an issue... but logic still is.
For about 5k I can put a GM 5.3 / 4L60e in it, and have 330 HP and a torque curve like south dakota from idle to 6200 rpm...
So I figure the logic point on the 6 is about 3k.

I've seen Hesco's... they say stock size valve, stock size ports, blah blah blah, kinda hard to see the point. Now if it had relocated valves to actually get the chamber inside the cylinder, a redesigned chamber that could take some pressure without pinging, and bigger intake ports and twice as bigger exhaust ports...

Boost could be fun, I'm more a belt drive than a wind driven type, and to stay in my arbitrarily chosen budget it would have to be preowned, perhaps a project castoff...
I'm gonna start looking... I just sold a procharger F1 setup, gave someone a hall of a deal, and bought an F3 and got a hall of a deal, so they are out there, tho jeep stuff might be kinda scarce...

What about an intake, does anyone make a proper efi intake that rambler didn't design to hold a 1bbl carb in 1953?
I'm thinking 6 big straight ports into a log plenum fed from a front mounted forward facing throttle body?

The only intake's I've seen for sale were from clifford, but one's to convert to a 2/4bbl . similar over-all design to stock. And one was a multi tb style - like weber side draft's. There have been a few people custom build their own  but I haven't seen any "import" style types for these. If you wanted to run a aftermarket system you could most likely use a big tb that mounts like a carb on the clifford and put the inj's in the runners

Keeping the stock valve size goes with the skinny bores and the smallish ports keep velocity up for the 4wheelers. I called them years ago about the flow #'s and all they would tell me was "15% more flow".............. :? I'm sure the ports are better then stock & the aluminum lets you run a bit more comp, but I dont know much about the chamber design. IIRC they have two cc sizes, but dont remember what they are.

Hesco, kenne bell and a few others used to have SC kit's , but i'm not sure if they still make them.

Turbo Tom built a 4.0 with......... a turbo (go figure  ) IIRC it made 450+ hp on like 9 psi. There are several people on here with turbos making great power
I know there's no belt, but it could be easier to find

If money is not an issue and you can install a GM 5.3 for 5K...I would go that route. I had a 4.6 stroker in my jeep before I totaled it. It ran good, but nothing like my 401, 79 CJ5.

I am going to build another stroker for my new Wrangler some day. But with only 54,000 miles, the 4.0 still runs great.

What will you do about emmissions with a GM 5.3?
