how can I tell it is a stroker?

Post by lone_eagle78 »

I just aquired a beat up xj, and was told it has a 4.6 stroker in it. I am planning on swapping the motor and trans into my xj because mine has 250k and both are really weak. I am wondering if there was a way to tell if it is a stroker or not. it does run strong, but unsure if it has the power of a stroker. the jeep only has front drive at the moment, and I found out it is running 355 gears on 35 tires. seems to have the same power with that set up as my zj 4.0. any info would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

I say take the oilpan off and see if there is a crank with 4 or 12 counterweights. The stock 4.0 crank has 8 and the new Scat stroker crank also has 8.

It's the only way to tell unless you run the Jeep on the dyno and get unexpectedly high HP/TQ numbers. :D

See if there is a spacer in front of the harmonic balancer..if there then yes. It could still be a stroker without the spacer but only 258 cranks needed the spacer. 2ndly...I can't see a stock motor turning 35 inch tires with a 3.55 rear without really being a dog. My same setup barely turns 31's on hilly terrain

they could have had the snout cut down then you wouldnt need a spacer.

Yes, they could have cut the snout or it might be the short snout, but if its got a spacer then its a stroker and he doesn't need to pull the pan or any other involved stuff. I think if it runs "normal" with 35's and the 3.55 rear then its definately got more power than stock and therefore a stroker

Pull a spark plug. Put a clothes hanger down the hole. Turn the motor over with a wrench. Measure the stroke.

I have heard several reports about the number of counterweights on the New Scat stroker crank! Can anyone confirm if it has 4 or 8 counterweights?

Sorry for spreading false info I read/saw a while ago that the scat has 8 weights--maybe the photo they used showed it had 8 or someone else claimed it had eight, so I repeated the error.

The best way to identify a Scat crank is it has the Scat name, part number, and serial number machined into the number one counterweight.

ok, tonight I swapped the tires off of it to give back to the guy I got it from. I put 235 15 on it, and it ripped those without a problem!! :slobber: at the moment I only have front drive because I tore out the rear pinion while getting it. I am excited to get it into my jeep and get it ripping up the 33 with 410 gears!!!!! thanks for all the info guys!!!   :rockout:
